Cash raised in a week for Moomin TV adaptation; $10,000 given by Terry Pratchett's daughter Rhianna
Finnish production company, Gutsy Animations, is aiming to raise $200,000 towards the visual development of two series of 13 22-minute-long episodes, the first of which will air in spring 2019.
The pioneering animation will be produced by a heavyweight team, including Oscar-winning director Steve Box, BAFTA-winning producer John Woolley, Emmy-winning writing duo Mark Huckerby and Nick Ostler, and creative director and executive producer Marika Makaroff.
The new animation series, called MOOMIN, will be made using a new 2D/3D hybrid technique, where characters are rendered in 3D in an environment with some 2D illustrative or painterly elements. A second visual concept has been released to celebrate reaching the milestone of 1/3 total funded, following the ‘Midwinter’ concept which was released to launch the campaign.
The second concept features characters from the short story The Invisible Child, about a little girl who becomes invisible when she is badly treated and only becomes visible again thanks to the kindness and friendship of the welcoming Moomin family.
Fans are being asked to pledge money in return for perks, which range from personal postcard updates from the production team to an all-inclusive trip to Finland.
Makaroff said: "We knew that a new television series would be hugely popular with Moomin fans, but we’re overwhelmed by the excitement that we’ve seen in response to the campaign. With help from the backers, we will be able to develop and produce the most faithful animation there has ever been. We won't shy away from the complexity and depth found in Tove Jansson’s original stories and the result will be a beautiful and heartfelt series that appeals to the whole family."
