Screening of BBC1 Christmas film version of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler's book

Magic Light Pictures and BBC1 invited Axel Scheffler and Julia Donaldson and a small audience to a screening at Soho House yesterday of the film adaptation of their picturebook Zog (Scholastic), to be shown over Christmas. Scheffler had not seen it before and was clearly touched by it, and both author and illustrator expressed their delight at the treatment of their tale.

Scheffler drew Zog for the guests, and Donaldson revealed during a brief Q&A that her original idea was for "Zog the zig zag dragon" and his friendship with a young knight. As it turned out, the story, published by Alison Green at Scholastic, concerns a young dragon, the biggest in his class, who tries harder than anyone else, but with less success, and his friendship with a princess who wants to be a doctor.

Voices are by Lenny Henry, Tracey Ullman, Hugh Skinner, Patsy Ferran and Kit Harington.
