Profit and Loss is the first book from journalist and filmmaker Rupert Russell
Paul Murphy, editorial director at Weidenfeld & Nicolson, has signed Profit and Loss, an analysis of global financial capitalism by journalist and filmmaker Rupert Russell. Weidenfeld has UK and Commonwealth rights from Andrew Gordon at David Higham.
Profit and Loss (spring 2021) will be a blend of on-the-ground reporting, analysis and storytelling on the butterfly effect of global finance capitalism – how the power of price connects disparate regions of the world and how a small disturbance in one region can cause turmoil in another.
Murphy said: "I was incredibly impressed by Rupert Russell's proposal for a book about the 'financialisation' of the commodity markets. His book promises to be timely and important, while also offering the narrative pleasures of someone like Michael Lewis when he writes about global finance. The book is international in scope and underpinned by a strong and original argument, while also shining a light on the stories of the ordinary people who Rupert has met. I think he has the potential to be an important new voice in serious non-fiction, and I couldn't be more delighted that W&N will be publishing his first book."
