Breakfast DJs Roman Kemp and Vick Hope pen middle-grade fiction title, with publication in September
The deal for World Rights was struck by Samantha Smith, publisher – Fiction and Picture Books and Fiz Osborne, commissioning editor, with Issy Lloyd at Insanity Group Ltd.
The book was written in collaboration with Chloe Seager, represented by Lauren Gardner at Bell Lomax Moreton and illustrated by Jason Cockcroft, represented by Jodie Hodges at United Agents.
According to the acquisition statement: 'A brilliant laugh-out-loud story with a twisting mystery sub-plot, Listen Up follows two groups of school friends who host competing school radio shows. When a school trophy goes missing, the radio rivals spot an opportunity for one of them to come out on top. After all, rule the airwaves, and you rule the school, right? But it might not be quite that simple…'
Roman Kemp said: "It's a huge honour to be a part of all of this, being able to tell stories, create characters and ignite the imaginations of children and adults. This project is something I’ve always wanted to do, and now that it’s here I can’t wait for everyone to explore the world that Vick and I have created."
Vick Hope said: "It is such a privilege and a joy to be given the opportunity to bring these characters to life. Ro and I care so much about the story we want to tell, and are excited to write a book that celebrates the tenacity, curiosity and creativity of children and young people. We hope to create a world of intrigue, twists and turns, but one in which our readers will recognise themselves and feel inspired to take on life’s challenges with open minds and hearts, regardless of their background. Ro and I love working together every day, and as a keen writer my whole life, joining forces on this project: a novel (!) is a dream come true!"
Smith said: "It’ll be no surprise to any of their listeners that Roman Kemp and Vick Hope have their finger on the pulse of what kids today are talking about. We cannot wait for them to bring their unique blend of banter and brilliance to the kids everywhere and look forward to this must-listen morning pair becoming a must-read duo!"
Osborne said: "Ever since our first meeting with Roman and Vick we have been hugely excited about this project. Their passion for the book and the creativity they’ve channelled into it is completely infectious. Kids are going to love it!"
