Philip Blackwell seeks bookseller to run pop-up shop in the Maldives

Just as the heatwave recedes into memory, Philip Blackwell has ridden to the rescue of the nation's beleagured booksellers with the offer of a job running a pop-up shop in a luxury desert island resort in the Maldives.

The successful applicant will be expected to write 'an entertaining and lively blog that captures the exhausting life of a desert island bookseller' and mingle with A-list celebrities and their friends.

The post comes via Blackwell's Ultimate Library venture, which he set up since he left the family bookselling business over a decade ago, and which provides books and books expertise for the super-rich in their homes, hotels and resorts.

A unique opportunity?

Possibly the best job in the world – seeking a desert island bookseller and blogger. Must like sun, sand, sea etc.

We are opening a pop-up bookshop on a luxury desert island resort in the Maldives and are looking for exceptional individuals to help manage the space.

Soneva Fushi is the original desert island hideaway resort and the ultimate in barefoot luxury with an eco twist. It is frequented by the discreet super-rich, A-list celebrities, and their families. In early October we are opening a small bookshop opposite the glass-blowing sculpture works.

The lucky individuals will have some pre-departure product training with the Ultimate Library team and Phaidon Press prior to flying to the Maldives to join the Soneva team for 3 month placement roles starting in October and late December.

The skills requirement include a passion for books and the ability to engage guests of all ages; an ability to write an entertaining and lively blog that captures the exhausting life of a desert island bookseller; be a children’s entertainer/storyteller (they have the world’s best kid’s club); maybe host creative writing workshops and an ability to fit in with the distinctive Soneva culture.

The role will evolve and it is in part up to you to make the most of this unique opportunity. The pay is derisory but the fringe benefits unparalleled.
