The Old Possum's Children's Poetry Competition , with Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy chairing the judges (), opens for entries today.

Children are being invited to write poems of no more than 25 lines on the theme of 'Heroes and Heroines', by 19 October.
Winners, in two categories (7 to 8-year-olds, and 9 to 11s) will be announced at a celebration on 15 December at the Unicorn Theatre in London, where they will be presented with cash prizes and poetry books, and with Children's Poetry Bookshelf memberships for their schools.
The Competition is organised by the Children's Poetry Bookshelf, a poetry book club for young people run by the Poetry Book Society. There is support from Old Possum's Practical Trust. Duffy's fellow judges are John Agard, Antonia Byatt, Gillian Clarke, Janetta Otter-Barry, and Roger Stevens.
