Manchester sun lights up Penguin beach

Last weekend's sunshine saw a pop-up Waterstones and beach in the city centre for summer reads promotion

Penguin was able to take advantage of the tail-end of the summer heatwave last weekend as it transformed a street outside Manchester's Arndale Centre into a pop-up urban beach complete with sand, deckchairs and ice cream, plus a Waterstones temporary bookshop. Zainab Juma, creative manager, Penguin Random House, reports that hundreds of shoppers attended the beach, with guests enjoyed engaging with Waterstones and Penguin booksellers, with plenty finding their new summer read.

The concept comes from the same team behind London’s #LikeAWoman bookshop, a pop-up bookshop in Shoreditch which only stocked female writers to celebrate International Women’s Day and 100 years of women’s suffrage in March.
