Roland Philipps at John Murray has bought two new novels by James Frey, author of the controversial memoir A Million Little Pieces. ILLUMINATION: THE LAST TESTAMENT OF THE HOLY BIBLE (Easter 2010) has been reported as Frey's 'third book of the Bible . . . My idea of what the Messiah would be like if he were walking the streets of New York today'. Philipps said that the book marked a 'very, very extraordinary next step for James'. Murray has UK and Commonwealth rights through Jenny Meyer and Eric Simonoff.
There was a huge furore in the US when it was revealed that episodes in A Million Little Pieces, which had been a pick for the Oprah Winfrey book club, had been inventions. In the UK, Philipps says, 'the book continued to be seen as literature that worked outstandingly in its own right. The fuss helped the sales greatly, and the book still sells several thousand copies a year.'
