Sales are up for agency's small press clients

It is not only the likes of Rupi Kaur and Kate Tempest who are responsible for the rise in poetry sales reported last week: the sales agency Inpress, many of the small press clients of which are poetry specialists, recorded a 68% rise in sales in 2017/18. Eighty per cent of the presses grew their sales during the period.

So there was a celebratory mood at Inpress' annual dinner at the Peasant in Clerkenwell, on the eve of the agency's sales conference. And there were enthusiastic receptions for the three poets who read in between courses of the excellent food: Sean Hewitt (Lantern, Offord Road Books); Karen Smith (Schist, Smith Doorstop); and Theresa Lola (In Search of Equilibrium, Nine Arches). Each was notable for, among other qualities, a bold use of religious motifs; bright futures beckon.
