Essentials includes titles by Margaret Atwood, Sarah Waters, David Mitchell

Hachette is to launch in July a classics list called Essentials. The titles, aimed at international markets, are drawn from across Hachette's imprints. They will be published into Australia, Ireland, India and New Zealand, as well as Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa and the Americas.

The titles are designed by Australian artist and designer Josh Durham. They are intended to be "unified as a series but distinctive as books".

The launch list is:

The Blind Assassin - Margaret Atwood
A Visit from the Goon Squad - Jennifer Egan
Cold Mountain - Charles Frazier
Schindler’s Ark - Thomas Keneally
If This is a Man / The Truce - Primo Levi
Cloud Atlas - David Mitchell
Gilead - Marilynne Robinson
Me Talk Pretty One Day - David Sedaris
The Sympathiser - Viet Thanh Nguyen
The Color Purple - Alice Walker
Fingersmith - Sarah Waters

Hachette Austalia MD Justin Ractliffe said: "It has been a joy to work on this project with my international collegues and this absolutely stellar list of authors and books. If you are curious, engaged, hungry for experience and alive to the possibilities of literature, with all its questions and complexities, challenges and provocations, shocks and comforts, terrors and joys - then these are the books for you. They will make you feel and they will make you think. They might just change your life."
