The Guardian First Book Award 2009 , run in association with Waterstone s, has announced a longlist. The nine titles are:

The Strangest Man, Graham Farmelo (Faber - non-fiction)
A Swamp Full of Dollars, Michael Peel (IB Tauris - non-fiction)
The Rehearsal, Eleanor Catton (Granta - novel)
The Wilderness, Samantha Harvey (Cape - novel)
The Girl With Glass Feet, Ali Shaw (Atlantic - novel)
The Selected Works of TS Spivet, Reif Larsen (Harvill - novel)
An Elegy for Easterly, Petina Gappah (Faber - short story)
The Missing, Sian Hughes (Salt - poetry).
The judges are Claire Armitstead (Chair), Martha Kearney, Tobias Hill, Nadeem Aslam, John Gray, and Katharine Viner. Stuart Broom of Waterstone's will represent the views of five reading groups attached to Waterstone's branches.
A five-strong shortlist will be announced in November, and the winner, who will receive £10,000, will be announced in December.
