New series is 'guaranteed to capture the imagination of fans of Philip Pullman, Jessica Townsend and Terry Pratchett's Tiffany Aching books'
Egmont Publishing has struck a two-book deal for a new series with middle-grade fantasy author Sarah Driver. Driver is the author of The Huntress trilogy, also published by Egmont, which launched as Waterstones Book of the Month in 2017.
The first book in the new series, Once We Were Witches, will appear in March 2020 in paperback, priced £6.99, aimed at readers of 9-plus. Liz Bankes, commissioning editor, signed the deal for world rights with Jodie Hodges at United Agents.
Once We Were Witches is the story of two sisters, Spel and Egg, in a "version of our own world that has magic bubbling under the surface". It will "capture the imagination of fans of Philip Pullman, Jessica Townsend and Terry Pratchett's Tiffany Aching books".
Bankes said: "We are utterly bewitched by Once We Were Witches. Much like Spel getting to step into other worlds, Sarah's unique voice and unforgettable characters invite readers into worlds that are full of adventure and sparkle with magic. This promises to be one of 2020's breakout middle grade series."
Driver said: "I am beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Egmont again, on this new series. I've been delighted by the enthusiasm for the project across the whole house, and feel that Once We Were Witches has found the perfect home. I'm so excited to bring the first book to readers next year."
