Staff wear green and host events to celebrate the UN-designated day in DK offices around the world
In London, the DK Be Green team hosted an environmental-themed celebration with various stalls
held by both DK colleagues and guests, plus a green-focused book sale and competitions to open a conversation about our impact on the environment.
This year’s World Environment Day theme is Air Pollution, and DK invited members of the Environment & Sustainability team at The Northbank BID to talk to staff in London about their work to improve the local environment, their clean air walking routes, and how DK staff can help to improve air pollution in the local area.
Also invited was Tanya de Afonseca, owner of zero waste store BYO. She spoke to DK staff about her aim to reduce packaging and food waste, and about her store where customers bring in their own packaging and fill and weigh products before buying.
Smart Energy joined DK to talk about its work as the national consumer engagement body
supporting the rollout of smart meters, which ensure accurate bills and highlight energy usage.
World Environment Day, 5 June, is the United Nations day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action to protect the environment. It was initiated in 1974 and is now celebrated in over 100 countries. Each World Environment Day is organised around a theme that draws attention to a particularly pressing environmental concern: the theme for 2019 is air pollution.
