Cultural highlights at Abu Dhabi

Discussions with Amitav Ghosh, Henning Mankell and Elias Khoury, and events featuring the contenders for the Sheikh Zayed Book Awards and International Prize for Arabic Fiction, are among the highlights of the 2009 Abu Dhabi International Book Fair (ADIBF - among the previous BookBrunch stories are and ). The winners of both awards will be announced at the fair, which runs from 17 to 22 March. Forty novels are in contention for another award, the Abu Dhabi Media Company's search for the UAE's favourite novels. The winning novels, one in English and one in Arabic, will be announced on the final day of the fair. There is a public vote at .

Amitav Ghosh will discuss his work with Ed Nawotka of Publishers Weekly on 17 March, when there will also be events featuring authors recognised in the Sheikh Zayed and Arabic Fiction awards. Simon Kuper will talk about his classic Football Against the Enemy (18 March); the Hay Festival will unveil the programme at Beirut, World Book Capital 2009; Henning Mankell will appear on 21 March; and there will be cookery demonstrations as well as discussions on literacy in the UAE, on book distribution, and on bridging Latin and Arab cultures.
