Borders is to sponsor the Waverton Literary Award, which involves the population of a Cheshire village in reading and voting on their favourite book of the year. The 2008 winner was Salmon Fishing in the Yemen by Paul Torday (Phoenix), who was presented with his award at a dinner in October.
The award was started in 2002 by Waverton inhabitants Gwen Goodhew and Wendy Smedley. There is a website, wavertongoodread.org.uk.
Borders will award the 2009 winner £1000, and also provide some support towards administrative costs.
