New, Pompeii-set series, plus Mr Gum stage play and revamped titles
Liz Bankes, fiction commissioning editor at Egmont UK, has signed a new series by Andy Stanton, bestselling creator of Mr Gum. The Paninis of Pompeii stars fart-trader Caecilius, his wife Vesuvius, his 10-year-old son Filius, household servant Slavius, and family dog Barkus Wooferinicum, as they stumble across pizza-emitting volcanoes, accidental gladiators and the terrifying legend of the "ma-wol-n-f". The first title is due in July, with the follow-ups coming in February and August next year. Sholto Walker provides the illustrations.
Egmont UK has world rights through Eve White at Eve White Literary Agency.
This is also a busy year fro Mr Gum, with a series revamp in May and a stage version opening at the National Theatre in July. The Mr Gum books have been translated into 32 languages.
Bankes said: "As the very proud publishers of Natboff and Mr Gum, a series that has already hooked one generation of children on reading, we are utterly thrilled with this incredible programme of publishing for Andy this year. Nibbleheads everywhere are going to be howling with laughter and 2019 will cement Andy's reputation as the funniest children's author in history."
Stanton said: "It's really exciting to have a new series out. I very much look forward to melting a new generation of young minds with my errant nonsense."
