Agard wins CLPE award

The CLPE Poetry Award for 2009 has gone to John Agard for The Young Inferno , illustrated by Satoshi Kitamura (Frances Lincoln).


Judge Jackie Kay described the book as 'a vibrant and brilliant retelling' of Dante's classic, and 'fabulously illustrated'. The award was made on Tuesday this week (7 July) at the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education.
Also shortlisted were Allan Ahlberg for Collected Poems, illustrated by Charlotte Voake (Puffin); Sharon Creech for Hate That Cat (Bloomsbury); Sophie Hannah and John Hegley (eds) for The Ropes (Diamond Twig); and JonArno Lawson (ed) for Inside Out, illustrated by Jonny Hannah (Walker).
The judges were Jackie Kay, Andrew Lambirth and Lindsay MacRae, chaired by Margaret Meek Spencer.
