Deal includes Last Orders and Waterland
Scribner (Simon & Schuster) has signed a new novel by Graham Swift, in a deal that also brings seven backlist novels - including the Booker-winning Last Orders and the Booker-shortlisted Waterland (both Picador) - to the imprint. S&S is now the publisher of all Swift's work.
Ian Chapman, CEO and publisher, bought UK and Commonwealth rights (inc audio) from Caradoc King at United Agents.
The new novel is Here We Are, a story of loss, love and memory centred on three young end-of-the-pier performers during the summer season of 1959. It is due next March. Scribner will reissue the backlist titles from July.
Chapman said: "Publishing Graham Swift is one of the great privileges of my career and with that comes a huge responsibility; a responsibility to honour the legacy of his writing as well as bring new readers to his work. In reissuing Making an Elephant and Wish You Were Here in hardcover last year, we were able to shine a new light on those works and we look forward to doing so with the rest of Graham's past work. Here We Are is a future classic and we intend to publish it with the confidence and creativity that such an outstanding novel deserves."
Swift said: "This is the happy fruit of my long connection with Ian that goes back to before Last Orders won the Booker. I'm thrilled to have another novel to be published by Scribner, now in the knowledge that they are to be publishers of all my work."
