Author Rachel Marks is graduate of Curtis Brown Creative course

Michael Joseph has signed Rachel Marks' "powerful, uplifting" debut novel The Spark. Editor Matilda McDonald bought world English rights for two books from Alice Lutyens at Curtis Brown.

Marks is a primary school teacher and photographer who has taken part in the Curtis Brown Creative course, and who has based her debut on her own experiences.

The Spark (August 2019) follows an unlikely pair brought together by anger management class. Jake is there to help him cope with his challenging 6-year-old Alfie, and Emily is there because she has to be. But meeting Alfie kindles something in Emily...

McDonald said: "This is the kind of debut you dream of - one which is full of genuine warmth and heart, characters you fall in love with and a concept that offers a new twist on the unconventional love story."

Marks said: "Being published by Michael Joseph is a dream come true. As soon as I met Matilda, I knew she was the right editor for me because her vision for my novel fit mine perfectly. I feel so lucky to have such an amazing team behind me and can't wait to share The Spark with readers."
