Launch of new Tracy Beaker novel
Penguin Random House Children's held the launch of Jacqueline Wilson's new Tracy Beaker novel, My Mum Tracy Beaker, at the Marylebone Hotel.
Wilson's editor Kelly Hurst told guests how it was reading The Illustrated Mum when she was on work experience at Transworld that made her realise she wanted to be in children's publishing. Wilson, newly flown in from Venice (gathering strength for her publicity tour), spoke of the temptation to write, after portraying single mum Tracy Beaker, "Tracy Beaker's Mid-Life Crisis" and "Tracy Beaker, OAP". She thanked her publishing team, her publicist Naomi Cooper, Trish Beswick, and illustrator Nick Sharratt (a partnership arranged by David Fickling), and told the story of how when she and Sharratt first met she knew when she saw his yellow socks that he was the right man to illustrate her unconventional heroine. (On this occasion, Sharratt's socks were red and black stripes.)
Sharratt and Wilson, in nuptial style, cut a celebratory cake, and Hurst gave Wilson a chunky silver ring to add to her collection, with a ring for every book she has had published.
