A hundred of 'the very best Irish short stories' selected by Sinead Gleeson
Selected by writer, editor and broadcaster Sinead Gleeson the anthology will be published by Head of Zeus in 2020. Publishing director Neil Belton acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Peter Straus at RCW.
According to the acquisition statement: 'Drawing on a rich tradition spanning almost two centuries, from Maria Edgeworth, Oscar Wilde and James Joyce to the current wave of young writers reinventing the story for a new generation, Gleeson will select 100 of the very best short stories from Ireland’s ample literary canon.'
Called The Art of the Glimpse, it will be published in hardback in October 2020. Belton said: "Every ambitious anthology constructs a new version of a literary tradition. There have been many anthologies of Irish short stories, but Sinead Gleeson brings to her selection of a hundred stories an unusually acute and selective eye. She has shown in her superbly edited collections The Long Gaze Back and The Glass Shore a sensitivity to voices often ignored in previous gatherings, and I look forward to the surprising and challenging choices she will make."
Gleeson said: "In 2014, I read Victoria Hislop's short story anthology of women writers, published by Head of Zeus. I was delighted to discover that it's one of an annual series dedicated to the form. I'm honoured to be part of this series as editor, and to have the opportunity to share short fiction by all kinds of Irish writers, from classic exponents and forgotten names, to more experimental work and the new generation of Irish writers."
