In association with NLT, latest venture from HC's Literacy Project
HarperCollins (HC) has pledged £20,000 in grants for independent bookshops as part of the Literacy Project, the initiative launched last year by HC ceo and Publishers Association (PA) president Charlie Redmayne. The grants, set up with the National Literacy Trust (NLT) to follow the Independent Bookshop Grants, are designed to support booksellers in attracting new customers and encouraging literacy in their communities.
There will be up to 10 grants, for projects that focus on children in the early years and at primary age. HC and NLT will offer support to successful applicants.
Ben Hurd, HC trade marketing director, said: "Independent bookshops are at the heart of their communities and perfectly placed to help drive literacy in their areas. We are delighted to be working with the National Literacy Trust to launch the Literacy Project Grants which will give bookshops the chance to run bespoke projects tailored to local needs."
At the PA agm last year, Redmayne said: "We must better reflect the society in which we operate if we are to broaden our audiences and attract more readers. This is not just a moral imperative but a commercial one."
The Literacy Project has also seen HC staff and authors take part in initiatives in Glasgow and Stoke-on-Trent.
