In memory of late publisher, two awards for South African students
The first Nick Perren Post-Graduate Publishing Awards were presented as part of the London Book Fair International Excellence Awards last night. They went to South African students Tsholofelo Matlhadji (right) and Kirsten Benecke (below left).
The awards are granted by the Nick Perren Publishing Foundation, set up in memory of the former John Murray MD and Profile chairman, who died in August 2016. Born in Kenya, Perren retained close ties with Africa, and the award in his name aims to support young South Africans wishing to pursue publishing careers.
Roberta Mondadori Perren, founder and director of the foundation and Nick Perren's widow, presented the awards. She said: "Nick.... remained very attached to his birthplace, Africa, and this led him to contribute greatly to the field of educational publishing in African countries. Nick was passionate about the power of education in developing countries and his work took him to many other parts of the world, but his deepest feelings were always for Africa."
