New BAME children’s publisher Knights Of marks first birthday with pop-up bookshop
Inclusive children’s publisher Knights Of will open a pop-up children’s bookshop in Brixton Market (pictured) from October 24 – 29. Stocked with books featuring BAME characters from a range of publishers and authors/illustrators, the bookshop will be staffed by expert children’s booksellers.
Knights Of has reported that when the initiative was announced on social media, the #ReadTheOnePercent Bookshop was spotted by children’s publishers, retailers, authors and illustrators, with offers of support from across publishing and bestselling BAME authors offering events. The bookshop comes as a response to the CLPE Reflecting Realities Report published in June, showing that only one percent of children’s fiction published in 2017 featured a BAME protagonist.
Knights Of, publisher of Knights and Bikes by Gabrielle Kent and For Every One by New York Times Bestseller Jason Reynolds, is opening the shop in Brixton where: 'there is no dedicated bookshop serving the community.'
Aimée Felone, co-founder of Knights Of, said: "Inclusive books are seen as niche and often shelved separately. The #ReadTheOnePercent Bookshop ensures that that cannot happen, by stocking only inclusive books. Every one should see themselves in the books they read and Brixton is the perfect community to embody that spirit."
