Bloomsbury signs anti-mindfulness humour book

Rights - NonFiction Thursday, 04 October 2018

The Little Book of Bad Moods is a pocket-sized gift 'to help you find misery in every day and let go of nothing'

According to the acquisition statement: 'Activities include What’s wrong with my life (and whose fault is it?); Retrospective comebacks; People who annoyed me this week; Twitter rage; and General gripes.'

Senior editor Xa Shaw Stewart and publishing director Alexis Kirschbaum acquired UK & Commonwealth rights from Rhea Lyons at Hannigan, Salky, Getzler in an auction. Other rights have been sold by Elina Ahlbäck Literary Agency in Finland, where the book was originally published in June and has established itself as a bestseller.

Rights have also been sold in North America, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Estonia, Serbia, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Taiwan.

Lotta Sonninen, herself an editor at Otava, said: "The news really spoiled my bad mood."

Xa Shaw Stewart said: "The Little Book of Bad Moods is fantastically cathartic. It has so much potential in the UK, where moaning is pretty much a national pastime – we live in a permanent state of glum irritation about the failure of infrastructure, the cold/hot weather, global and national catastrophes, each other... this is the book we never knew we needed and I am thrilled to be publishing it this Christmas."

Elina Ahlbäck added: "Lotta Sonninen parodies the positivity trend and adults’ activity books in a hilarious way. Her book has reached 16 territories already – it seems like we’re entering a new 'Let’s get cranky!' phase."

Bloomsbury will publish The Little Book of Bad Moods on 15 November 2018.
