Richard O'Brien succeeds Matt Windle

Richard O'Brien has been appointed Birmingham Poet Laureate. He takes up the role for a two-year term, succeeding poet Matt Windle.

O'Brien is a teaching fellow in Shakespeare and creativity at the University of Birmingham, the author of three poetry pamphlets: your own devices (tall-lighthouse, 2009), The Emmores (Emma Press, 2014) and A Bloody Mess (Dead Ink/Valley Press, 2015). He won an Eric Gregory Award (Society of Authors) in 2017. His plays have appeared at the Arcola Theatre (The Selfish Giant, 2016) and in staged readings at the REP and the Old Print Works.

Aliyah Begum, 15, was appointed Young Poet Laureate.
