Karin Slaughter's tenth book Broken crashed into the Sunday Times hardback bestsellers at number one, selling 10,521 copies in just a part-week on sale.

When Kate Elton, her editor at Random House, phoned her with the good news, Slaughter - who hails from Atlanta, home of Margaret Mitchell - was appropriately standing outside Lower Slaughter Manor in the Cotswolds.

As the crime fraternity gears up for Harrogate, the Crime Writers Association gathered for a warm-up event held, appropriately, at the Sherlock Holmes Hotel on - where else? - Baker Street. Some 80 authors attended, including Craig Smith (right), in the UK to promote his new thriller Cold Rain, just out from Myrmidon, and Tom Harper, author and chairman of the CWA. Congratulations to an indomitable spirit, Livia Gollancz, who, for more than 30 years presided over the publisher her father Victor had founded in 1927. Last week, her ninetieth birthday was celebrated among old friends from Gollancz's glory days at a party that also honours the memory of the house's much-loved rights director, Jane Blackstock, who died in 2008.

The Profile and Serpent’s Tail summer party is now as much a tradition as Henley and Ascot, but rather more fun. And the weather is always better – “the great sky god” (as Gore Vidal would say) shining on the righteous independents. “I reckon,” said Caroline Franklin, surveying the scene in her and Andrew's Belsize Park garden, a full hour after the do was supposed to have finished, “that Andrew pays a special sub.”

Actually, by 7.15, Profile’s founder and MD was declaring “a crisis”. It was so hot that party-goers were opting for beer rather than wine. “We’ve run out,” said Franklin, as he raced out with a wheelie-bag and a wodge of notes to where son Mikey was checking names and bags in the front garden. There was a discussion as to which store would have the most bottles in the freezer, Tesco or Diamond. “Get 80 bottles – and ask for a discount!” instructed Franklin, whom agent Carole Blake admires for his honesty, straight talking and negotiating skill, infuriating as that can sometimes be to an agent.
