The idea’s been tried before - including George Pelecanos going as far as releasing a promo CD to tie-in with Hard Revolution, and Andrew Smith’s Moon Dust now having an accompanying soundtrack CD of the same name. But the notion of a playlist accompanying a book remains an intriguing prospect.
Even more so when it’s Thomas Pynchon, who has supplied Amazon with a playlist of 43 tracks to accompany his new novel, Inherent Vice. The book, possibly one of the few which could improbably be described as psychedelic noir, sees the author drop many Sixties pop cultural references and the tracks, from the Beach Boys to the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, are all mentioned in the course of the novel.Rather than just viewing the list, for anyone who fancies hearing the tracks while reading the book, I’ve created a Spotify playlist here. It features all the songs available on the streaming music service, with the occasional alternate version where necessary. Some tracks may not yet be on the site or are unavailable due to rights restrictions. Others may be even harder to find. Or, should that be impossible to find, as they seem to exist only in Pynchon’s head. Unless Droolin’ Floyd Womack has kept as low a profile as Pynchon has over the years, minus the acclaim. Also, view a promotional clip for the book here and judge for yourself whether it’s Pynchon making a rare "public" appearance as narrator...
